This painting depicts the Hagia Sophia Cathedral. After his emigration to Turkey in 1920, the painter got interested in creating decorative artworks that depict exteriors and interiors of Istanbul’s numerous monuments of architecture. Painting technique and topic bring this painting very close to the works of the great Russian painter Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin.

Vladimir Konstantinovich Petrov (1880-1935) is a Russian artist. He studied art in Tbilisi, but was forced to stop his professional education due to the war. He participated in battles in the World War I against Germany and later in the Civil War on the side of the White Army. After the defeat, he immigrated to Turkey in 1920. After a while he settled in Constantinople (Istanbul) and gained fame as an artist who depicted decorative interiors and architecture of Istanbul.
