Harlamoff Alexei Alexeevich
October 18, 1840 (town Dyachevka, Saratov province) – April 1925 (Paris)

Painter and graphic artist.

Born in the family courtyard lieutenant A.S. Kireeva, A. A. Grigoriev, who took after the freestyle name Harlamov. Original art education was under the leadership of the painter V. Afanasyev. From 1852 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Art at the class of historical painting under A.T. Markov. During the period of study received all existing academic awards: in 1857 and 1862 – small silver medal for drawing and sketch, in 1863 – two large silver medal for drawing and sketch. In 1865 completed the picture on the small gold medal on the program “Ananias before the Apostles”, but the rewards are not received. In 1866, for the painting “Baptism of Kiev” was awarded a small gold medal, in 1868 – a large gold medal for the program “Return of the Prodigal son in the family home. He graduated from the course with the title of class artist 1st degree and the right of a pensioner’s trip abroad.

In 1869 as a pensioner of Imperial Academy of Art went to Paris on his way to visit Berlin. In 1870, because of the Franco-Prussian War, for some time he moved to Belgium. In The Hague, was commissioned by the IAH copy of a painting by Rembrandt’s “Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp”. Traveled to London. In autumn 1872 he returned to France. He took private lessons with the painter L. Bonn. In 1873 he was awarded a bronze medal at the World Exhibition in Vienna. Participated in exhibitions in the halls of Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg and Paris Salon. In 1874 he was awarded the title of Academician of the painting “The poor musician”, “Mordovskaya girl”, “Head of Italian” and a portrait of the artist’s I.P. Pozhalostin.

In 1872 became a member of TPHV, regularly sent the works to the exhibition of the Association. Lived mainly in Paris, where he had a studio, periodically came to Russia.

Harlamoff – one of the most prominent Russian artists of the second half of the XIX century, who has achieved recognition not only in Russia but also in Europe. The artistic legacy of the wizard is quite diverse: it found the portraits of distinguished deep psychological characteristics of the genre, close to “peredvizhniki” tradition, but the most significant part of the so called “heads” that are created along the lines of salon art of the period and characterized by grace and a certain mush.

The artist went through a fascination with Dutch painting of the XVII century, stylizing under her many early paintings (late 1860 – early 1870). In 1870 in their “heads” master turned to the traditions of Italian painting of XVII – XVIII centuries. In the second half of 1870 briefly carried away features plein-air paintings, transfer of sunlight and air. In 1880 he returned to the stylization “under something” museum “. The artist perfectly mastered the technique of painting, was a superb colorist, reaching in his works extraordinarily expressive colorful effects. In this master’s career, which was largely focused on the art market had no significant effect on the development of the art of the late XIX – XX centuries, remains as to the side of the leading trends in painting this time.

Harlamoff’s pictures are in many museum and private collections, including the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, the Scientific Research Museum of Russia Academy of Arts, Saratov State Art Museum im. Radishshev and others.
