BOBROV VIKTOR ALEKSEEVICH

April 18 1842 (Gatobuzhi village, St. Petersburg province) — July 2 1918 (Petrograd)

Painter, graphic artist, sculptor.
Born into a merchant family, brother of artist A.A. Bobrov. He received his primary education at the Larinsky and 2nd St. Petersburg gymnasiums. In 1860, he enrolled the Imperial Academy of Arts, studied in the class of historical painting in class of T. A. Neff, P. M. Shamshin, A. T. Markov, V. Basin and B.P. Villevalde. For his student work, he was repeatedly awarded medals, in particular, in 1861 he received a small silver medal, in 1862 a large silver medal for a sketch from nature, in 1863 a large and small silver medals for “Self-portrait” and a drawing from nature, in 1864 a large silver medal for the sketch “The Head of an Old Woman” (“The Knitter”) and the painting “The Interior of the Room“. From 1862, he participated in academic exhibitions. During his studies at the Academy, he was a member of the art circle of P. A. Krestonostsev.
In 1867, he left the Imperial Academy of Arts, without completing the course, with the title of a class artist of the 3rd degree, but the very next year, for the portraits presented at the regular academic exhibition, he received the title – class artist of the 1st degree. In 1873, he was awarded the title of academician for the portrait of Professor A.Y. Krasovsky.
In 1875, as he become interested in the etchings of I. I. Shishkin and guided by A. I. Somov, he began to master the technique of engraving on copper.  In the 1870s – 1880s, he performed a series of portraits of Russian cultural figures using the etching technique. In 1876 “for excellent knowledge in the art of engraving“, he was awarded a large and small incentive medals from the Imperial Academy of Arts.
He worked a lot in watercoloring, creating “female heads” in such fine technique. From 1882 (until 1902, with interruptions) he participated in exhibitions of the Society of Russian Watercolors, from 1887 he was a member of that Society. In 1883–1885, he exhibited his portraits at the exhibitions of the Wanderers Society. He was engaged in teaching and restoration of paintings for private individuals. During 1890-1891, he served in the Expedition for the preparation of state papers as a drafter and engraver. In the same years, he made several trips to Europe. In 1893, he participated in World Exhibition in Chicago. In the second half of the 1890s, he turned to sculpture. In 1897, he was awarded the title of Officier d`Academie of the French Academy of Public Education and Fine Arts.
Bobrov is one of the leading artists of the second half of the 19th century, who distinguished himself in various genres and types of art. He is best known as a master of painting and engraving portraits. The artist’s creative heritage is quite large: there are more than one hundred and thirty etchings alone.
The artist’s painting combined realistic tendencies and elements of academism. If the portraits of Bobrov are close to the Wandering tradition, then the images of costumed figures and nudes are created in the spirit of the salon art of that time.
In the artist’s printed graphics, sheets with “notes” in the margins are of particular collector’s value – small portraits, which were printed in variations next to the central image, sometimes giving to the engraving the character of a unique work.
Bobrov’s works can be found in many museum and private collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, Pushkin Museum.
