DONTSOV GERMAN EVGENIEVICH

In 1945 he began to study at Art Academy of Latvian SSR, he learned from K. E. Uban, U. E. Skulme. He graduated from Academy in 1949.
From 1949 to 1952 he worked as a pedagogue at the Art Craft school No.7. He started to exhibit his works in 1939. Personal exhibitions were held in Riga (1967), Jurmala (1973). German Dontsov was one of the most active members of the group „Artists of Latvia – The Great Patriotic War participants“. He participated in all of the exhibitions of the group. His works were exhibited at many exhibitions across the Republic, USSR and abroad – in Chile (1965), USA (1966), Great Britain (1967), France (1968), Germany (1972), Japan (1970,1973), Finland (1972), Switzerland (1973).
The paintings of the artist are kept in the Latvian National Museum of Art (16 paintings), in the Artists’ Union of Latvia (24 paintings), the Astrakhan State Picture Gallery named after P.M. Dogadin, the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia, and in other museum and private collections.
At the beginning, he painted mostly industrial landscapes with elements of figural composition, where human figures had their own individual meaning. Gradually landscape forces out all the other genres, and a role of human figure comes down to staffage. His works from this period are distinguished by the noise of the colour and expression.
