HRENOV ALEXANDER SERGEEVICH (1860 – 1926)

 

STATION ZIMA
The artist painted this painting in 1918-1919, during his trip to the Far East. He held a personal exhibition of watercolors in Vladivostok in June 1919. At the end of 1919, he emigrated to Chine and lived in Harbin.

PROVENANCE:
Painting was purchased in 2006 from Viktor Vasilievich Popov.
Viktor Vasilievich Popov (1932 – 2008) – Doctor of Medicine. Chairman of the “Balto-Slavic Society” from 1989 to 1996. Publisher of the newspaper „Church and The World“.

 

By order of Emperor Nicholas II, the artist A. S. Hrenov completed a series of watercolors with scenes of the royal hunt. The collector of his works was the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich.

 

Railway station Zima is located 230 km from Irkutsk on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Station Zima is known for:
• The poet Yevgeny Alexandrovich Yevtushenko was born and lived part of his life here.
He wrote poems about Zima Station as a child and later from 1953 to 1956.
• During the October Revolution:
In early January 1920, the “Supreme Ruler” of Russia, Admiral Kolchak, disbanded his convoy and continued on his way to Irkutsk under the protection of the White Czechs; In January 1920, General Kappel ordered two columns of the White Army to join at Zima Station and here prepare for a decisive attack on Irkutsk in order to save General Kolchak and the gold reserves.
